He has also worked as a volunteer with the Muscular Dystrophy Association Camp during the 2015 summer program. He has a deep passion for assisting people to lead healthy lifestyles and works with persons with disabilities such as muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis.
Matthew knew Michael Lange because of family friendships. Once he heard about the foundation forming and learned of its purposes, Matthew became one of the foundation’s earliest volunteers when he immediately volunteered to help in any way he could. Prior to the incorporation of the foundation in October 2015, he began spreading the word about the coming foundation to friends at WSU, helped to design the foundation’s logo by bringing a young adult voice to the design process, and volunteered to author blogs for the foundation to help support health and wellness. He has also recruited other Washington State University students to get involved with the foundation.
Matthew J. Sutherland
Matthew J. Sutherland is currently a student at Washington State University (WSU) studying Political Science Pre-Law, and intends to go back to school in the Fall to pursue a post-Baccalaureate degree in Physics. Most importantly, Sutherland is an activist, participating in Black Lives Matter, Pro-Immigration, and most recently Solidarity with Standing Rock rallies. He has a passion for social justice and environmental justice, and hopes in his lifetime to see vast criminal justice reform, a strong turn towards renewable energy, stronger civil rights protections, better respect for Native American sovereignty, a less interventionist foreign policy, a foreign policy that prioritizes respect for cultures and peaceful solutions, reducing sexual assault and suicide, providing better access to education, and leaving the world a better place than how he found it. The goals and values of the Michael F. Lange Foundation resonate strongly with him, and he wishes to continue the legacy of Mr. Lange by continuing to promote social change, social justice, and peace.
